The Spaces Between Light and Dark
Clair-Obscur – Tal Walker, piano

Pianist Tal Walker’s latest album, Clair-Obscur, is conceived not merely as a collection of French piano music, but as a conversation: between light and shadow, miniature and larger forms, and, most significantly, between Lili Boulanger and her teacher Gabriel Fauré. Its title suggests the black and white of the piano keyboard, but also the subtle gradations of colour, harmony and expression that characterise the music gathered here.

The title, the French equivalent of chiaroscuro, is particularly apt. Borrowed from the visual arts, where contrasts of light and shade lend depth and atmosphere to a painting, it evokes a musical world in which colour and texture are as important as melody and structure. Both Fauré and Boulanger were masters of suggestion, capable of conveying intense emotion through seemingly modest musical gestures, unexpected harmonic shifts and the delicate interplay of voices.

Walker is no stranger to this repertoire. His impressive 2022 debut recording brought together Préludes and Nocturnes by Fauré, Poulenc and Messiaen, revealing a pianist with a particular affinity for the colours and expressive subtleties of French piano music. Subsequent explorations of Debussy have further cemented this interest, and Clair-Obscur feels like a natural continuation of that artistic journey, while offering a more focused examination of the relationship between two composers whose musical languages are closely connected yet strikingly individual.

The relationship between Boulanger and Fauré is deeply human. Boulanger knew Fauré from a young age, as he was a friend of the family and the teacher of her sister Nadia….Both composers share expressive melodies, counterpoint, and use of the full spectrum of piano registers and emotions, from melancholic to uplifting. We see similarities between their Thème et variations and short pieces, but also a very distinct compositional voice. (Tal Walker, interview for ArtMuseLondon.com)

In this new release, Tal Walker places the relatively unfamiliar piano music of Lili Boulanger alongside works by Fauré in a programme that invites us to hear affinities between teacher and pupil, as well as the emergence of Boulanger’s strikingly individual musical voice.

Lili Boulanger

Lili Boulanger

Walker says, ‘It was a fascinating time when French composers were searching for their own musical identity, stepping away from German influence (particularly that of Wagner)’, and one hears that distinct French musical language in the album’s opening pieces – all miniatures by Lili Boulanger, whose perfumed, piquant harmonies, shifting colours, shimmering textures and eloquent use of the contrasting registers of the piano are redolent of Debussy and Ravel. That is not to say that all of these pieces are delicate musical sweetmeats. The Theme of the Thème et Variations is angular and stark, while the first variation is heavy in texture and darkly lit, its mood haunting and full of foreboding. The variations that follow are full of foreboding, and even where the textures are denser or more florid, darkness pervades this music.

Boulanger’s Thème et variations provide the bridge to Fauré’s Thème et variations, Op. 73. Composed in 1895 and regarded as one of Fauré’s greatest and most monumental contributions to solo piano literature, this work pays homage to the German Romantic variation tradition, particularly Schumann’s Symphonic Études, with echoes of Rameau and Saint-Saëns. While some variations are lively, almost playful, the overall mood is, like Boulanger’s set, sombre.

Gabriel Fauré

The Huit pièces brèves, Op. 84, follow the Variations – miniatures, reflecting Fauré’s evolving compositional style, moving from early salon lyricism to the more complex harmonic language that characterised his later period. Some are whimsical and elusive; others are introspective or aphoristic. The eighth and final piece of the set is fluid, serene and moving.

Clair-Obscur has an appealing sense of artistic purpose: Walker has assembled a programme that fosters connections among composers, forms and musical ideas. The pairing of Fauré and Boulanger is particularly illuminating, enabling the listener to appreciate their shared musical inheritance while recognising the distinctiveness of their voices.

There is also something refreshing about a recording that places colour, nuance and expressive intimacy at the centre of the musical experience. In a repertoire where the temptation might be to exaggerate atmosphere or indulge in excessive sentiment, the most persuasive interpretations let the music’s subtleties speak for themselves.

Tal Walker’s sensitive touch, nuanced pedalling, and broad tonal palette invite us to listen attentively to those subtleties: the shifting boundaries between light and dark, simplicity and complexity, restraint and emotional intensity. Above all, it reminds us that musical expression is often most affecting not when everything is clearly illuminated, but in those elusive, half-lit spaces where light and shadow meet.
