Its warm timbre and expressiveness have inspired composers from Vivaldi to Elgar.
Nowadays, thanks to YouTube, audiences can enjoy the results of that inspiration by watching cello concerto videos. Many have been seen by millions of viewers across the world.
Today, we’re looking at the most popular cello concerto performances on YouTube as of early 2026, presented in reverse countdown order.

8. Vivaldi Concerto for Two Cellos in G-minor – Stéphane Tétreault and Kateryna Bragina
1.9 million views
The first concerto on the list is a two-for-one deal: two solo cello parts in one concerto!
The soloists are Canadian cellist Stéphane Tétreault (just fifteen years old at the time that this video was made) and Ukrainian cellist Kateryna Bragina.
The minor key, propulsive rhythms, and echoing phrases turn the opening movement into a dramatic dialogue acted out between the soloists.
The wistful, slow movement is achingly beautiful, while the energetic final movement showcases some deeply satisfying syncopations.
7. Haydn Cello Concerto – Bruno Philippe
2 million views
Rumours of the existence of a Haydn cello concerto floated around for years, but the full manuscript wasn’t rediscovered until 1961, when it was unearthed in a Prague library archive.
At that point, the concerto became a beloved part of the cello repertoire.
According to the YouTube heat map, the most popular part of this performance by cellist Bruno Philippe is around 8:00 during the virtuosic first movement cadenza.

6. Dvořák Cello Concerto – Gautier Capuçon
2.3 million views
Here’s the first of multiple appearances of the Dvořák cello concerto.
There’s a reason why it’s so popular. Antonín Dvořák’s cello concerto, composed in New York between 1894 and 1895, is widely considered to be one of the greatest cello concertos of all time.

Antonín Dvořák
Inspired by acute homesickness for his Czech homeland and the looming death of his sister-in-law (whom he had once been in love with), Dvořák dug deep to pour intensely bittersweet emotion into this score.
French cellist Gautier Capuçon, born in Chambéry in 1981, studied with Philippe Muller and Heinrich Schiff.
In this performance, he captures both the tender nostalgia and humanity of Dvořák’s masterpiece.
5. Dvořák Cello Concerto – Yo-Yo Ma
2.4 million views
In this performance, the most famous cellist of our time – the incomparable Yo-Yo Ma – performs the Dvořák concerto with the Czech Philharmonic.
Born in Paris in 1955 to Chinese parents and raised in New York, Ma made his concert debut at age 9. He has gone on to win nineteen Grammys (so far!).

This interpretation of the Dvořák concerto showcases his warmth of spirit and his decades-long familiarity with the work.
Ma’s virtuosity and musicianship, combined with the sound of the Czech Philharmonic and the gorgeous aesthetics of the Rudolfinum concert hall in Prague, make for a truly thrilling performance.
4. Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 – Bruno Philippe
2.7 million views
Here’s the return of cellist Bruno Philippe!
When French composer Camille Saint-Saëns composed his First Cello Concerto in 1872, it broke with tradition. Instead of three movements, it unfolds as one continuous energetic sweep.

It has remained a favourite of cellists and audiences ever since.
French cellist Bruno Philippe brings fluid phrasing and stylish elegance to his countryman’s concerto.
According to the YouTube heat map, the most popular moment in this performance happens around 21:00 in the work’s closing moments, when Philippe raises his chin to look around, then leans over his instrument during the intense final flurry of notes.
3. Dvořák Cello Concerto – Jacqueline du Pré
4.9 million views
Born in Oxford, England, in 1945, Jacqueline du Pré rose to fame in her teens and redefined cello playing with her raw emotion and radiant, exuberant charisma.
It is one of the great tragedies of music history that multiple sclerosis forced her to retire at age 28. She passed away in 1987 when she was 42.

Dvořák’s music, with its mix of passion and homesickness, is custom-made for her free-spirited, ultra-emotional approach.
Conducted by her husband, Daniel Barenboim, this recording immortalises her infectious confidence, youthful vitality, and expressive freedom.
2. Elgar Cello Concerto – Jacqueline du Pré
2.1 million views (video uploaded in February 2011)
2.9 million views (video uploaded in May 2016)
There are two popular videos of the same performance circulating on Youtube, so we’re going to count them together as one.
Jacqueline du Pré’s Elgar concerto is one of the most legendary cello performances ever captured on film. (Frankly, it’s one of the most legendary classical music performances ever captured on film.) It even eclipses her stunning Dvořák interpretation.
Edward Elgar composed his cello concerto in 1919, haunted by the devastation wrought by World War I. Its elegiac tone marks the twilight of the Romantic Era in music, the British Empire, and even Elgar’s own life and career.
When du Pré first recorded it with conductor Sir John Barbirolli in 1965, the combination of repertoire and soloist proved to be electric.

Jacqueline du Pré and Daniel Barenboim
In this video performance of the Elgar dating from 1967, she appears with her husband, conductor Daniel Barenboim. The music is even more heartbreaking in retrospect, since we know that du Pré will be forced by illness to retire in just a few short years, at the height of her powers.
It goes to show how memorable her playing was, that even after close to sixty years, and dozens of high definition videos by modern cellists being uploaded online, viewers still are seeking this one out, grainy black and white footage be damned. It’s just that powerful of a performance.
1. Elgar Cello Concerto – Yo-Yo Ma
5.8 million views
Here it is, with over 5.8 million views, the most popular cello concerto video on YouTube: Yo-Yo Ma playing the first movement of the Elgar cello concerto.
It’s a stunning interpretation, with a palpable atmosphere of wistful, wounded sorrow.
Its placement on this list is a testament to both Ma’s popularity and the resonance of the Elgar cello concerto, a century after its composition.
In contrast to du Pré’s youthful explosion of emotion, Ma’s interpretation is more mature and subdued, yet offers a similarly deeply felt humanity.
Daniel Barenboim conducts.
