Youth and Music: Greater Bay Area

Founded in 2017 as a cultural initiative to bridge East and West through music, the Youth Music Culture the Greater Bay Area (YMCG) brings together young professional musicians between the ages of 18 and 30 for 15 days of music-making. Musicians from around the Greater Bay Area (Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and Macao) and from around the world have an intense week of musical training and mentorship from some of the leading musicians in the world.

From 29 January through 12 February, the magic happens in Shenzhen and culminates in chamber and orchestral concerts throughout the Greater Bay Area: Guangzhou (6 February), Shenzhen (8 February), Hong Kong (9 February), and, for the first time, Macao (10 February). The faculty, assembled by British conductor Daniel Harding, includes members of the Berlin and Vienna philharmonic orchestras, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Bayerische Rundfunk Symphony Orchestra.

Founded by conductor Long Yu, joined by Music Director Daniel Harding, YMCG has seen unprecedented growth over its first decade. In 2025, musicians from 21 countries participated, and a new masterclass in conducting, led by Maestro Harding, was established. There is also an orchestral composition competition with the winning pieces being performed as part of the concert series.

The concerts in Shenzhen and Hong Kong will open with Mahler’s Blumine and his Rückert-Lieder, with mezzo-soprano Karen Cargill. The second half of the concert will be Richard StraussEin Heldenleben, Op. 40. Over the 15 days of YMCG, some 23 works in styles ranging from classical to contemporary and those that cross genres will be performed, exposing the YMCG participants to the widest world of classical music today.

Strengthening international artistic exchange is a critical part of the YMCG story. For participants, the 7 concerts, the 10 masterclasses in conducting, vocal music, and instrumental music, and the 5 keynote lectures by renowned conductors, competition laureates and arts administrators will expose them to both performing and behind-the-scenes discussions of classical music’s role in today’s world. More than just playing, the participants will have the opportunity to think about artistic career development, international collaboration, and the role of music in cultural exchange.
