Chopin
Kate Liu Performs Chopin: Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23
Kate Liu’s appearance at the Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw in October 2015 was a defining moment in her career, establishing her as a formidable talent on the classical music scene. At just 21 years of age, Liu delivered performances that combined technical brilliance, emotional depth, and a profound affinity for Chopin’s music.
Earning a third prize, she also garnered the Polish Radio Prize for the best mazurka performance and a rare standing ovation. Her participation was particularly significant given her youth and relative lack of international exposure. The jury, including luminaries like Martha Argerich, however, clearly recognised Liu’s exceptional musicality.
Beethoven
Ludwig van Beethoven: Piano Sonata No. 31 in A-flat Major, Op. 110 (Kate Liu, piano)
Kate Liu’s debut solo album pairs piano sonatas by Beethoven and Brahms. It marks a significant milestone in her career, showcasing her interpretive depth and technical mastery beyond her established reputation as a Chopin specialist. Beethoven’s Sonata No. 31 is a fitting vehicle for Liu’s lyrical and introspective style, given its blend of lyrical warmth, contrapuntal complexity, and spiritual transcendence.
Her interpretive approach is characterised by her signature lyrical sensitivity, nuanced phrasing, and her ability to convey an emotional narrative. Her exceptional control over dynamic creates a widely expressive range, while at the same time balancing the diverse moods of the sonata. The album was recorded after a hand injury, and it underscores her resilience and versatility in tackling Beethoven’s late style.
Mozart
Kate Liu Performs Mozart: Piano Sonata No. 8 in A minor, K. 310
In her performances of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart‘s works, Kate Liu demonstrates her ability to adapt her lyrical sensitivity and technical precision to the Classical era’s clarity, elegance, and emotional subtlety. In her performance of K. 310, Liu emphasises dramatic contrasts, highlighting the stark dynamic shifts and minor-key intensity of the opening movement.
Her technical precision is evident in her clean articulation and evenness in rapid scales, and her pedalling is minimal, ensuring transparency in Mozart’s sparse textures. The performance demonstrates her ability to adapt her emotive style to a more restrained aesthetic.
Brahms
Johannes Brahms: Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5 (Kate Liu, piano)
Kate Liu’s performances of Brahms, notably her 2025 debut album recording of the Op. 5 Piano Sonata, demonstrate her ability to navigate Brahms’s emotional depth, rhythmic intricacy, and textural richness.
Her singing tone, honed through Chopin, translates effectively to Brahms’s melodic writing, particularly in the lyrical moments. Liu balances Brahms’ emotional extremes with restraint, avoiding exaggeration while conveying profound depth. Her recording, post-injury, reflects her resilience and artistic maturity.

Liu’s technical command is evident, and her voicing ensures clarity in Schumann’s dense textures. She is able to project Schumann’s intensity in real time, with minor imperfections adding to its immediacy. Liu maintains a sense of arc in Schumann’s fragmented structures, balancing spontaneity with discipline.
