The intimate Brahms
Brahms almost completely rewrote his Trio op.8 thirty-five years after its first performance – yet the rarely performed original version (recorded here) is a splendid example of the impetuous, fantastical universe of the young composer. Similarly, his intense self-criticism meant it took him nineteen years to produce the definitive version of his Piano Quartet op.60, perhaps the freest and most intimate of his three works for these forces.
