Sheng Cai Plays Tchaikovsky
Highlighting lesser-known works

Canadian pianist Sheng Cai takes a fresh look at Tchaikovsky‘s piano music, highlighting repertoire often overshadowed by the piano concertos. In this recording, Cai presents selections from the composer’s solo piano output: the Grand Sonata for piano, a work of near-symphonic scale, the Dumka, Six Pieces for Solo Piano Op.19, and transcriptions of ballet excerpts from Nutcracker and Swan Lake.

Debunking the often unfair appraisal that Tchaikovsky’s solo piano music lacks imagination, this disc showcases the composer’s expressive depth, musical poetry, and contrasting moods and colours.

The opening Dumka, Op. 59, combines lyrical introspection with passionate virtuosity. The title ‘Dumka’, meaning ‘thought’ or ‘rumination’, references a Ukrainian style of improvised song with an instrumental accompaniment. With its switches between slow and fast folk-inspired music, it is related to Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies, and Sheng Cai brings both expressive warmth and sparkling virtuosity to the piece.

Six Pieces for Solo Piano, Op. 19, is a suite of characterful pieces, ranging in mood from the dreamy Reverie du soir to the playful Scherzo humoristique. Cai neatly captures the individual personalities of these charming miniatures with sensitive phrasing and subtle shadings.

At the heart of the recording lies the substantial Grand Sonata, written in 1878 for composer and virtuoso pianist Karl Klindworth. Symphonic in its scale and imbued with Romantic expression, the sonata points to Tchaikovsky’s second piano concerto and the fourth symphony. In his sensitive interpretation, Cai deftly navigates the Sonata’s complex architecture, bringing subtlety to the work’s more intimate moments and panache to its dramatic climaxes.

The disc closes with two solo piano transcriptions of some of Tchaikovsky’s most beloved ballet music — Sheng Cai’s own transcription of Act II, No. 10, Scene, from Swan Lake, and the Pas de Deux from The Nutcracker, transcribed by Mikhail Pletnev. In his transcription, Cai captures the narrative core of the original ballet music, blending it with graceful virtuosity.

Cai makes a compelling case for this repertoire, playing with great expression, musical thought, and a colourfully nuanced sound. Listen out for delicate filigree moments in the treble register, beautifully executed by Cai. This rewarding recital disc features Russian melancholy, folkloric vitality, and orchestral grandeur, thoughtfully curated and masterfully performed by Cai. It’s an ideal entry point for listeners eager to explore Tchaikovsky’s less familiar solo piano works.
