Shhhhh…. Can you hear that? It’s the sound of World Listening Day, celebrated on 18 July. This special day is hosted by the World Listening Project, a nonprofit organisation that is “devoted to understanding the world and its natural environment, societies, and cultures through the practice of listening and field recording.”

World Listening Day was established in honour of the birthday of Raymond Murray Schafer, a Canadian composer and environmentalist who is often called the founder of acoustic ecology. He actually developed a “World Soundscape Project,” which laid down the fundamental ideas and practices of that field.
Listening is an art that requires undivided attention and patience from a person and benefits another who is in need of it. Listening is also beneficial for the listener, improving their listening skills and sharpening their awareness of their surroundings. So, shall we listen to some classical tracks to honour this special day?

Echoes of Eternity
The 12th-century sacred chant “O Viridissima Vira” by Hildegard von Bingen is a sublime choice for World Listening Day. It embodies the essence of deep, mindful listening to both the natural and spiritual worlds.
This monophonic hymn, composed by the visionary mystic, celebrates the “most verdant branch,” a metaphor for the Virgin Mary, but its evocative imagery of growth, vitality, and divine harmony connects directly to the acoustic ecology themes of the day.
In 2025, as we navigate a world of digital noise and overstimulation, this chant offers a counterpoint: a call to pause, breathe, and listen deeply. Performed without the complexity of modern instrumentation, this music demands active listening, rewarding those who immerse themselves in its delicate contours with a sense of connection to something larger.

Sonic Dawn

“On the Nature of Daylight” by Max Richter is an ideal selection for World Listening Day as it encapsulates the art of listening with profound emotion and sonic clarity. The piece unfolds with a gentle, cyclical motif that builds into a luminous crescendo.
It evokes the quiet beauty of dawn or the passage of time itself. The rich, layered harmonies invite listeners to engage deeply with each swelling note, fostering the kind of attentive awareness that World Listening Day champions.
It’s a perfect fit for World Listening Day’s mission to celebrate diverse soundscapes and to deepen our connection to the world through sound. Its cinematic quality, often used in film scores, enhances its ability to evoke vivid imagery, yet its simplicity allows listeners to project their own experiences onto its sonic canvas.

Whispers of the Heart
The gorgeous Intermezzo in A Major by Johannes Brahms is a profoundly fitting piece for World Listening Day as it invites listeners into a world of introspection. This lyrical composition, with its tender and flowing melody and rich harmonic depth, unfolds like a private conversation, weaving delicate phrases that evoke a timeless serenity.
Its gentle dynamics and intricate interplay of voices encourage the kind of deep listening celebrated by World Listening Day, aligning with themes like “Listening to the Weave of Time” by bridging personal reflection with universal emotion.
The understated beauty connects directly to World Listening Day’s mission of fostering awareness of soundscapes, offering a sonic space that feels both grounded and transcendent.
In 2025, amidst a world often overwhelmed by digital noise, this piece serves as a reminder of the power of simplicity, encouraging listeners to slow down and savour the delicate interplay of melody and harmony.

Mirrors of Stillness
Composed in 1978, “Mirror in the Mirror” by Arvo Pärt is probably the quintessential choice for World Listening Day. Its minimalist beauty distils the act of listening into a profound, meditative experience.
The piece’s ethereal clarity and deliberate pacing make it a perfect fit for World Listening Day’s mission to celebrate acoustic ecology and intentional listening. Pärt’s composition offers a sonic sanctuary, urging us to pause and listen with intention.
As World Listening Day on 18 July 2025 invites us to pause and truly hear the world, it reminds us of music’s power to deepen our connection to sound and time. These classical works, with their delicate textures and evocative depths, encourage us to listen with open hearts. So, on this special day, let’s put on a favourite track, step outside, or simply sit in stillness, and let the world’s symphony unfold around us.
