Launched in 2010, the festival is established to honour the memory of the Russian cello virtuoso, both as a great musician and an ardent champion of human rights. Each year, the opening ceremony is held on his birthday. Concerts take place in Russia’s finest concert halls, including the world famous Great Hall of the Moscow conservatory. With Olga Rostropovich, daughter of Maestro Rostropovich, as the Artistic Director, international conductors, orchestras and musicians are invited to perform during the week. Previous guest performers include Zubin Mehta, Gidon Kremer and the Kremerata Baltica.
