On 23 September 2025 at Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall, 8:00pm, two Irish music gems come together to kick-start City Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong’s (CCOHK) 2025-2026 season. Barry Douglas, the internationally acclaimed Irish pianist and gold medallist of the International Tchaikovsky Competition, performs Beethoven’s fifth piano concerto under the baton of CCOHK’s chief conductor Vahan Mardirossian. Nicknamed the Emperor, Beethoven’s final piano masterpiece is an emotion-charged work of breathtaking virtuosity and lyrical beauty, celebrated for its boldly unconventional opening piano solo. CCOHK completes the evening with a symphony of boundless attractive melody, conceived on a jolting car ride through the Irish countryside by Sir Arthur Sullivan, composer of Gilbert and Sullivan fame.
Praised for his “formidable technique and expressive style” (Classics Today), Barry Douglas launched his highly successful international career after winning the Gold Medal at the 1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition. He has performed as soloist with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the London Symphony Orchestra, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Halle Orchestra and the Orchestre National de France, among others. He is also an exclusive recording artist for Chandos, for whom he has released 20 CDs, including the complete solo piano works of Brahms in a 6-volume set. As Artistic Director of Camerata Ireland and the Clandeboye Festival, he continues to celebrate his Irish heritage whilst also maintaining a busy international touring schedule. In 2021 he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
