The End of the Road

I don’t know what was said or done, and frankly, I really don’t care. After all, personal stuff of an intimate nature should stay personal. However, their professional schedules began to be unexpectedly altered, particularly those concerts where they were to collaborate as soloists and conductors. And rumours started flying on internet forums, specifically when both Wang and Mäkelä simultaneously stopped following each other on social media.

Additional concerts fell by the wayside, with everybody scrambling for substitute performers. On a personal level, this brief but intense romance seems to have left a lasting emotional impact, making it impossible for them to share a public stage for now. On a professional level, it’s just unexpected. It goes to show that our social media-obsessed world returns even the most exceptional and seasoned professionals to the emotional maturity of little children. Maybe they should take a page from the professional playbooks of Charles Dutoit and Martha Argerich or Anne-Sophie Mutter and André Previn?
