If you ever need proof that the majority of preparatory work for a concert performance is done during rehearsal, just have a look at the conducting technique of Richard Strauss. That is, if keeping the beat with one hand can actually be called a conducting technique! Strauss was frequently bored to tears on the podium, but his manner of conducting never changed. This is also true with Strauss conducting his own work, as you can see in this wonderful and rare clip from “Till Eulenspiegel,” recorded with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1944.
