Established in 2002 by North Rhine-Westphalia and Founding Director Gerard Mortier, the festival is organized into three year cycles, each with its own theme under the decision of different artistic directors. Former Artistic Directors include Jürgen Flimm, Marie Zimmermann and Heiner Goebbels. The annual event features interdisciplinary productions, uniting contemporary developments in fine art, pop, jazz and classical music, with special dedication to the art of songwriting. Over the years, prominent artists from all over the world have appeared under the spotlight, including Elvis Costello, Akram Khan, Cecilia Bartoli and Thomas Hampson.
