Commencing as an expansion to the traditional summertime Salzburg Festival, the Osterfestspiele Salzburg was founded in 1967 by Herbert von Karajan. This annual festival is held during Easter week embraces opera and classical music in the delightful city of Salzburg. All the concerts and operas reward the alpine landscape and enthusiastic atmosphere, at the Großes Festspielhaus is where the experience takes place, presenting major opera productions of high artistic standards from the beginning to the end. This unique festival perpetuates its founding philosophy: to present the highest artistic standards and a demanding programme based on exclusivity. For most of the festival’s history, the resident orchestra of the Easter Festival has been the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2005 it began a contemporary music series and presentations by youth orchestras.
