Founded in 1970 by German choral conductor Helmuth Rilling together with vocalist and conductor Royce Saltzman, the festival is an annual celebration of the works by J.S. Bach and his musical legacy. Performances of choral-orchestral repertoire are the major highlights, in addition to extensive educational activities including conducting masterclass. Throughout the years, many notable classical stars have appeared in the festival, such as Jeffrey Kahane, Robert Levin, Thomas Quasthoff and the Kronos Quartet.
