
School music programs such as those in, clockwise from left, School District of Lancaster’s Ross Elementary School, Pequea Valley High School and Ross Elementary, can have significant impact on brain development and maturation.
In this study, published in the Journal of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, researchers have proven that playing a musical instrument actually changes the architecture of the brain. Serial MRI exams of more than 200 youths showed that changes occur in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brain, leading to a more developed white mater. Full story.
