There is a fascinating new research study going on at the National Institutes of Health regarding brain maturation and playing a musical instrument.

In this study, published in the Journal of American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, researchers have proven that playing a musical instrument actually changes the architecture of the brain. Serial MRI exams of more than 200 youths showed that changes occur in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex of the brain, leading to a more developed white mater. Full story.
