First established in 1986 as a celebration of the 150th anniversary of the famous Italian spa resort town Merano in South Tyrol, the festival has now become a fixed institution of cultural offerings in Italy. Throughout the years of running, the Merano stage has gathered the world’ s best classical groups, including the City of Birmingham Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Emerson String Quartet, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra of New York. Besides classical music, the festival has also featured various artists from diverse genres such as the “King of Klezmer” Giora Feidman, jazz legend Joe Zawinul, the eccentric Friedrich Gulda, or vocal wonder Bobby McFerrin. To add to the superb musical sensation, guests can also check out the beautiful botanical garden- the Gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle nearby, as well as savouring the famous red and white wines in the local vineyards.
