“Kletzmer” is the musical tradition of Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Performed by professional musicians, it traditionally consisted of dance tunes and virtuosic instrumental pieces performed at weddings and other celebratory gatherings. The musical style seeks to imitate the human voice, and that includes talking, singing, laughing, screeching and weeping. Hardly surprising then, that the clarinet features most prominently!
