Founded in 1954 by pianist Maria Canals and her husband, writer Rossend Llates, the competition has gained international prestige shortly after its reception in Barcelona. With Queen Sofia of Spain as President of Honour, the event is held at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona, featuring piano, violin, singing, cello, chamber music, guitar, percussion and flute disciplines. With its signature TV channel available round the clock, music lovers from around the globe can always enjoy live broadcast or highlights of the virtuosic showcase. Françoise Thinat, Dinorah Varsi, Dag Achatz, James Tocco, Vestard Shimkus were past laureates.
