With an aim to provide an international stage for young and promising flautists, the competition is first established in 1985. Held every four years in Kobe, a historic port city in Japan, it is the only regular contest exclusively for flute from around the world. Participants are required to perform a wide ranging repertoire including flute solo pieces, chamber and orchestral music in four different rounds. Previous prize winners include Emmanuel Pahud and Emily Beynon, who are now leading musicians in the flute circle.
