First launched in 1984, the prestigious biennial competition has been held in Bilbao, a city famous for its museums and churches located in northern Spain. Chaired by Maria José Bayo Jiménez, the jury comprises established opera singers, conductors and artistic directors from the international music scene. Contestants will perform Oratorio, Cantata, Lied and arias during the competition, and be accompanied by the Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa in the final round. Past winners include Ana María Sánchez, Isabel Rey, Micaela Carosi and Francisco Casanova, who all have successfully established professional career in theaters around the world.
