Established in 1965, the competition has been held every five years in Helsinki. Named after the Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius, it requires contestants to perform his works which played an important role in the formation of the Finnish national identity at the time of late Romantic period. Past winners include Oleg Kagan, Pavel Kogan, Viktoria Mullova, Ilja Kaler, Leonidas Kavakos, Pekka Kuusisto, Sergei Khachatryan and Alina Pogostkin.

- The Alice & Eleonore Schoenfeld International String Competition First established in 2013, the competition aims to promote highly gifted young musicians.
