Named after German composer and violinist, Louis Spohr, the competition was founded at the Liszt School of Music Weimar in 1995. It has taken place every three years in Weimar, a city known for its cultural heritage, with a focus on young talents up to 21 years of age. The contest offers opportunities for international exposure, including concerts and broadcasting. Past winners include Hyeyoon Park, Yoriko Muto, Elena Kawazu, Karol Danis, Marcus Tanneberger and Yuki-Manuela Janke. The jury is chaired by Friedemann Eichhorn.
