First established in the mid-1990s by Franz Liszt Weimar, the competition is specially dedicated to Joseph Joachim, one of the most important chamber musicians of the late 19th century. Under the artistic direction of Ulrich Beetz, aspiring ensembles are invited to take part in this triennial contest in various chamber music formations. Participants are required to perform a complete repertoire with compositions from early 1800s to after 1960. In addition to the top three prizes, a special award is given for the best interpretation of the contemporary work. The jury comprises experienced chamber musicians and professors from international music institutions, past jurors include Josef Suk, Brunhard Böhme and James Tocco.
