Named after great composer and virtuosic pianist, Frédéric Chopin, the competition was established by Polish pianist, Jerzy Żurawlew, in 1927 in Warsaw, birth place of Chopin. It has been held every 5 years since 1955. It requires participants to perform Chopin’s music in his original interpretation, but also gives them opportunity to show their various styles. Cheung Wai Ching Rachel from Hong Kong won the junior group of the International Competition for Young Pianists in memory of Vladimir Horowitzin in 2003. Past winners include Krystian Zimerman, Maurizio Pollini, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alexander Uniński and Yundi Li.
