Founded by the Liszt School of Music in Weimar, the piano competition is a triennial event honouring Franz Liszt since 1994. The first five editions were held exclusively in Weimar. From 2009 onwards, the first round of the contest is organized in Bayreuth, Liszt’s place of death. As a tradition, finalists will perform his two piano concerti in front of a knowledgeable jury composed of established pianists and professors. Former jury members include Károly Mocsári and Michel Béroff. Special prize will be awarded for the best interpretation of a Franz Liszt composition. Winners are guaranteed with future concert engagements with professional orchestras such as the Staatskapelle Weimar and Jena Philharmonic Orchestra.
