How scary music makes movies scarier

Imagine the 1973 horror movie “The Exorcist” without its ominous score. Would “Psycho” be the same without Bernard Herrmann’s music? It’s no surprise that a good scare and a good score go hand-in-hand.

Michelle DiBucci, a horror film composer and professor of music theory at the Juilliard School, credits the pitch of the music with having A FRIGHTENING effect: “In ‘Psycho,’ it’s the high that scares us – it’s in the stratosphere register of the violins.” Full story.
