To commemorate the 100th birthday of Henryk Wieniawski, the competition was initiated by his nephew, Adam Wieniawski, in 1935. It is one of the oldest contests in Europe. It was first held in Warsaw and since 1952 revived in Poznań, Henryk’s favourite place. Organized in every five years, the contest aims to challenge the talents, technical skills and artistic imagination of international violinists under the age of 30. The jury comprises established violinists and conductors. Former jurors include Maxim Vengerov, Yehudi Menuhin and Shlomo Mintz. Successful contestants are guaranteed with overseas concert engagements and individual classes with established violinists and educators. Previous winners include David Oistrakh and Piotr Janowski.
