Originally founded in 1951 as the Sibelius Week, the first edition of the Helsinki Festival took place in 1968 focusing on showcasing world class performances of classical music. Today it is the largest multi-arts festival in Finland, which aims to make art accessible for all. Organised annually in late summer, the event has now expanded to cover more genres including world music, circus, children’s events, art gallery tours, dance, poetry, theatre and jazz programmes. Reputable artistic figures such as Luciano Pavarotti, New York City Philharmonic, Pina Bausch have all previously appeared on the Helsinki stage.
