Named after the great Baroque composer, the festival is first established in 1922 to inspire music lovers from around the world by presenting opera productions, concerts and oratorio performances. The event is held in Halle, the birthplace of Handel. Each year, the Halle Opera House produces one of the numerous operas by the composer as a unique tradition. Most of the concerts are held in historical venues, such as the cathedral, the Marktkirche, Handel House and the Goethe-Theater in nearby Bad Lauchstädt.
