Growing up in Austria, my mother once took me to a concert featuring Friedrich Gulda. Everybody knew that he had won a bunch of awards and prizes for his Beethoven interpretations, and indeed, his Op. 54 and 81a were spectacular! The concert program promised Beethoven improvisations in the second half, but it said nothing about Gulda coming out naked, accompanied by his naked girlfriend! My dearest mother almost fainted, but for Gulda it was the start of a series of eccentric crossovers that included his rendition of “Light my Fire,” originally recorded by The Doors in 1966.
