The Festival International de Musique de Besançon Franche-Comté was established in 1948 when it opened with the recitals and chamber music in the cultural city of Besançon. Being amongst one of the oldest and the most prestigious classical music festivals in northeastern France, the festival has developed an extensive symphonic repertoire over the years, with the presence of great Maestros such as Cluytens, Schuricht, Markevitch, Kubelik, Maazel, Dutoit… leading to the creation of the Concours international de jeunes chefs d’orchestre in 1951. Lately, the event has also added contemporary repertoire and special programmes dedicated to children.
