Established in 1979 to honour the violinist Romano Romanini, the competition has taken place in Brescia, a city situated at the foot of the Alps in northern Italy. It aims to gather talented violinists from all over the world and introduce the Grand Prize winner by offering a series of concerts in Brescia, Rome, Milan and other Italian cities. Past winners include Luca Fanfoni, Gabriele Pieranunzi and Dora Swartzberg, one of the jury members in this edition. Other jurors include Suna Kan, Filippo Juvarra, Mihaela Martin and Kyoko Takezawa.
