First launched in 1950 by Bach-Archiv Leipzig, the contest is held biennially since 1996 with three changing subjects in the city of Bach, Leipzig. It is regarded as one of the major international competitions for young instrumentalists and singers between the age of 16 and 33. Established and knowledgeable musicians are invited as jury members of their corresponding specialty including Ton Koopman, Christopher Hogwood and Ivan Monighetti. In addition to prize money, special awards are also given to excellent contestants by Christa Bach-Marschall Foundation for their participation in masterclasses.
