Named after the famed violinist and composer, Niccolò Paganini, the competition was founded in 1954 and has been held in Genoa, the birth place of Paganini. It requires contestants to perform Paganini’s works in each stage, from preliminary, semi-final to final. It has awarded to renowned artists such as Gyorgy Pauk, Gérard Poulet, Gidon Kremer, Ilya Grubert and recently, Massimo Quarta and Mariusz Patyra. Lu Siqing was the first Chinese prize winner in this competition, while Huang Mengla and Ning Feng are among famous laureates in this decade.
